The Celona Network Planner is a free tool that provides the capability to estimate the CBRS based private mobile network resources required for a specific location or facility. It takes into account the available spectrum, coverage area and capacity requirements. The tool is available through a web-based interface as well as an application programming interface (API) which is particularly useful for network planning across a large number of sites.

The Network Planner includes functionality to design for the following key criteria for wireless coverage and capacity planning of CBRS based private LTE networks:

  1. Spectrum availability based on the facility location determined through physical address or geo-location

  2. Coverage area based on the square footage and type of facility or environment

  3. Capacity requirements based on the number of simultaneously active client devices and application bandwidth demand

The network planner provides a real-time spectrum inquiry through the Spectrum Access System (SAS) based on the geo-location of the site in order to determine the available spectrum at that location. The geo-location and coverage area can be determined by entering the physical site address, entering the square footage for an indoor facility, or drawing cartographic boundaries on a map for outdoor areas. This allows the planner to accurately determine CBRS LTE access points quantity to meet capacity demands given the specific amount of spectrum available at the site location. 

In addition, the network planner provides users with the ability to perform “what-if” analysis modeling by adjusting the amount of spectrum used within the network design in order to account for future changes due to Priority Access License (PAL) deployments or incumbent detection if the site is within a Dynamic Protection Area (DPA). Sophisticated modeling is used through discrete event network simulation and regression modeling, which provides the capability to accurately model and design for many different types of facilities. This functionality encompasses outdoor topology characteristics, indoor facility attenuation and multipath characteristics, RF link modeling to determine client signal quality, and resulting performance characteristics to determine network load and resources required to meet capacity demands.

Capacity modeling and network load analysis is performed by entering client device quantity and application bandwidth requirements and download versus upload traffic patterns. This capacity modeling includes modeling of the LTE traffic scheduler, TDD-LTE configuration profile, and inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) modeling to determine frequency reuse characteristics as part of the capacity analysis.

The Network Planner provides an estimation of the quantity and category of CBRS LTE access points required to meet the requirements for a specific network deployment. These results can be used for a rough order of magnitude estimation of the network equipment required for budgetary planning purposes.
