What is DPDK?
DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) is a set of libraries and drivers for fast packet processing on Intel x86-based CPUs. DPDK allows applications to bypass the operating system kernel and directly access the underlying hardware, thereby achieving much higher throughput and lower latency than traditional networking software.
All Celona Edge Express and Celona Edge Enterprise deployments running Version 2302 and above of Celona Edge OS software will have DPDK enabled.
Why is DPDK required?
This enables Celona Edge OS to extract best performance from the underlying platform
DPDK is also required to support following advanced networking and enterprise integration features -
Supernetting
L2 bridging for industrial applications such as PROFINET (Coming Soon!)
Network requirements to support DPDK
DPDK adds additional requirements in terms of number of IP addresses needed to bring up and operate the Edge Cluster. Number of additional IP addresses needed per cluster will depend on
Number of nodes in the cluster
Number of IP domains configured in the cluster
Single Node Cluster
3-Node Cluster
Note
All IP addresses are allocated by default using DHCP
Refer Edge Cluster creation workflow to allocate Static IP addresses
If using DHCP, it is highly recommended that IP addresses are reserved for all interfaces
Interface MAC addresses can be found in the Orchestrator for reference
Use the Celona Edge Cluster IP Network planning sheet to assist with IP design
